Notes for Joseph [Joab] (Jarvey) NEWBERY
“Jarvey/Jarvie”
Came from Hitchin
Known as Joab as a child.
Jockey in Derby, Newmarket, Epsom, Aintree.
(The Jockey Club unlikely to be of help here. From their web page:
“If your relative was riding or training after 1900 then we will have a record of the licence issued to him and be able to confirm that he did hold a licence and the years for which he held it. However, it is unlikely that we will have any further information, unless he was particularly successful and his achievements merited a mention in either the Flat or National Hunt racing encyclopaedias.”)
Got too heavy so became a vet.
Worked for the Lamberts (prominent local family) & lived on the estate. Arthur V Newbery remembered him as being relatively well off.
died 1923 aged 78 at 57 Countess Avenue.
buried St Pauls churchyard
In "Whitley seaside chronicle" at his death they had:
Came to Whitley 1878 as coachman to Mark William Lambert of Whitley Hall & lived in the lodge at the corner of Whitley Rd & Victoria Tce until the hall grounds were developed at the turn of the century.
Bred terriers—bit the tails off to dock them at 6d a time.
Since he married Jemima in Newcastle in 1875 he was likely resident earlier than 1878.
Census 1881: Born at Hitchin and wife Jemima came from Faskally. Children Catherine & David born at Gateshead & James, Alfeur (sic) and Marion at Whitley.
Census 1891: No record for Joseph or the Lamberts in Whitley so may have been away. Jemima Newbury (sic) was listed as married and head of the household which should imply separation.
Died of pneumonia and pleurisy after going for a ride on his birthday. He got soaking wet but would not change out of his wet things until he had attended to his horse, a black mare called Queenie. He died 3 or 4 days later.
He and his sons are buried in the family plot in St. Pauls church, Whitley Bay.
There is also a “Mary Graham NEWBERY” plot 662 in the St Pauls burial register. [Archie’s 1st wife]
